Quantitative EEG analysis system for neurology and psychiatry
- Product
This software package is sold as an add-on to existing digital EEG machine customers,
to provide them with quantitative EEG analysis and discriminant function capabilities. It is designed to
work on machines from a large number of different manufacturers, including Biologics, Cadwell,
Lexicor, MicroMed, NeuroScan, Nicolet, and Telefactor, among others.

- What we provided
The software is composed of three main components: data translation, which is intended to
convert the data format of the machine's manufacturer into a standard format, data analysis, and
data presentation. We provided the data analysis portion of this product, including all the
mathematical and statistical manipulation that allows discriminant functions to make clinical
judgments.
Digital EEG is typically collected from between 20 and 32 channels, depending on the manufacturer,
and digitized. We take this
data, transform it into the frequency domain, and focus our attention on certain frequency bands
that have been clinically shown to be important. For each channel, we compute the absolute power,
the relative power, the dominant frequency in each band. In addition, we look at asymmetry (how
activity in one brain hemisphere relates, power-wise, to activity in the corresponding location of
the other hemisphere, as well as at coherence, which measures how much different areas of the brain
work in synchrony with each other. These various measures are then normed, using a very large clinical
database collected over a period of twenty years. The results are fed into a set of discriminant
functions that allow clinicians to answer questions such as "is this patient depressed?" "If the patient
is depressed, is this unipolar or bipolar depression, and is it complicated by alcohol?".
